Lydia Raim, a junior at Clear Creek Amana High School, began playing the euphonium in 5th grade and took to it quickly. She is a former band student of Dan Davies, and currently plays with the award winning CCA High School Band, under the direction of John C. Smith. She started private lessons with EIBB’s own Todd Bransky after hearing him play on an EIBB concert, and they quickly connected.
As an 8th grader, Lydia was accepted into SEIBA Honor Band and the All Iowa 8th Grade Band held at the Iowa Bandmasters Association’s annual conference in Des Moines. She is a two year Iowa All-State Euphonium player. She has attended the Northern Iowa Festival of Bands and Iowa State Honor Band Festival (twice with the Gold Band) for the past 3 years and the University of Iowa Honor Band for the past 2 years. She was a finalist this year in the Northern Iowa Scholarship Solo Competition. She is also a two time semifinalist in the Bill Riley State Fair Talent Search. Her favorite solo to play is Weber’s Last Waltz by Rimmer. She loves listening to tuba and euphonium music, especially Steven Mead. She plays a Yamaha 642 and uses a Denis Wick Steven Mead Ultra 3 mouth piece.
Lydia also plays piano and trombone and sings. She plays in the school Jazz Band, sings in choir and jazz choir and leads a girls group called the “Junior Choir”. She has been cast as “Gertrude”, in Seussical the Musical at CCA this spring. She also sings in her church choir and occasionally plays in a brass trio with her sister and father. She is president of her 4-H Club and is co-leader of a Clover Kids Club. She shows cattle and waterfowl and loves to create, whether it is drawing, sewing, or her specialty: painting birdhouse gourds. She has been accepted into the National Honor Society. Her future plans are to become a band director.
