The bar was raised once again on the level of competition this year at the US Open Brass Band Championships that took place in St.Charles, Illinois.  Bands this year included The Brass Band of Central Florida, Dublin Silver, Fountain City, Motor City, Prairie and The Eastern Iowa Brass Band.  EIBB came out with a solid fourth place finish behind Fountain City, Dublin Silver and Central Florida.

Highlights of the completion included commentary by “The Voice of the US Open”, Frank Renton.  Host of the BBC radio 2 weekly program “Listen to the band” and widely known all over England, Frank returned for his ninth year as compere of the US Open.

EIBB added two buskers groups this year and wowed the crowd by playing; “Accidental Mambo” by C.Franzetti / Arr.: R. Gilje and “You are the New Day” arranged by the band’s own Bob Driggs.

Directed by Kate Wohlman and featuring music from the wildly popular brass band movie Brassed Off, EIBB entered a dimly lit stage adorning miners hats, as depicted in the movie.  Flugel horn soloist Dan Davies seduced the audience with his rendition of Concertio De Aranjuez.  Wohlman also arranged the popular English hymn, Jerusalem, to fit into the theme of the show.  The finale from the movie and also the finale from their show was the William Tell Overture by Rossini.

Pleased by their performance and hard work, the band hopes to share their US Open show with local audiences at their Christmas Concert on December 17, at 7:30pm in the Mt.Vernon District Auditorium.
