Promoting the Brass Band in North America
The goal of this competition is to encourage the further growth and development of the brass band movement in North America by providing a unique and exciting forum for the participating bands and by promoting the highest standards of performance and entertainment.
Entertainment Contest Format
Towards this end, the U.S. Open is an entertainment contest in format, which is unique among brass band contests in North America. No test piece will be required. Instead, each band will perform a 25-minute set of music of their choosing. Standard brass band instrumentation is required, with a limit of 30 performers plus Conductor for each competing band. Judging will be open, and the adjudicators will be among the finest and most experienced available.
Along with a cash prize and trophy, the winning band overall will be crowned U.S. Open Champions, while awards and prizes will also be offered in several other categories, including Most Entertaining, Best Performance of a March, Best Soloist and Best Performance of a New Composition or Arrangement.
One of the favorite features of the day among audiences and band members alike has become The Buskers Contest. This is a fresh look at the traditional solo and ensemble contest. The “Buskers” allows bands to showcase their individual or small ensemble talents while also keeping the entertainment flowing throughout the day. The loose format is designed to encourage bands to make the most of the opportunity and be creative. The contest will be held in between band performances while other bands are setting or striking their stage. A “Mystery” judge in the audience will decide the winner and the “trophy” for this event is a top hat and loose change!
Vendor and Sponsor Exhibits
The U.S. Open features vendor exhibits from the highest quality and most respected names in brass and percussion as well as a vast selection of printed and recorded music. Previous sponsors and vendors have included Besson/The Music Group, Bernel Music, Kanstul, Fred Rhodes/Courtois Brass Instruments, Getzen, Smith-Watkins, Warburton Mouthpieces, Drum Corps International, NABBA, Salvation Army Publications, Solid Brass, and Notable Images.
Awards Banquet The perfect ending to an exciting day. After the competition the bands retire to a cocktail reception followed by an awards ceremony and banquet.
The U.S. Open aims to draw the finest brass bands from North America and around the world. If your band is interested in participating in the U.S. Open Championships, please contact Clark Niermeyer at firstname.lastname@example.org
The Eastern Iowa Brass Band has been invited to share a concert with the Linn Mar High School Band on Thursday, October 31st at 7:30pm. This special event will help raise money for the Linn Mar music department as well as being a warm-up concert for the EIBB’s performance at the US Open Brass Band Championships on Saturday, November 2nd.
Let me tell you folks, there is nothing like the experience of a live brass band concert. If you have never been or have not been to a live concert for a long time, it is time to treat yourself to an hour and a half of pure excitement and entertainment.
I know that you can listen to brass band music on your iPod, your car stereo, or on your home theater, but you will be missing the experience. At a live concert, you can watch each musician and see the effect that music has on them. You will become a part of the music in a way that cannot be experienced by listening on your iPod or listening while driving in the car. You can watch the music being made! At an Eastern Iowa Brass Band concert, you are up-close and personal with each of the musicians, the conductor, the announcer, and your fellow concert goers. I guarantee that you will have a shared-experience like no other. I haveheard a live concert described as a mènage-a-trois between the composer, the performer, and the listener. The composer leaves a coded message to the performer, who must then work out his own interpretation of the message. The audience must then take this interpretation and work out a response, which could affect subsequent compositions and performances.
The Eastern Iowa Brass Band performs brilliant, contemporary, heart-thumping, audience-friendly concerts that will enhance your life, give you goose bumps, and put a smile on your face. You will be ready to face the challenges of the upcoming week with renewed energy and enthusiasm. The cost of a fantastic live brass band concert is less than that of a movie and popcorn at a big theater, so what are you waiting for?
Bring your kids and treat them to a first-time experience of live music. It will be an event that they will never forget and may open their ears and hearts to a life-long love of live music. Hope to see you there!!
Plan to attend the first concert in our 2013-2014 subscription series. The concert begins at 3pm on Sunday, October 13th in the Mount Vernon District Auditorium. Tickets $10 adults, $4 students. Available at the door or in our online store: click here
