MOUNT VERNON – The Mount Vernon-Lisbon Community Development Group today announced that the 4th Annual Mount Vernon Chocolate Stroll will take place Saturday, June 1, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The free music and chocolate event invites guests to stroll down Mount Vernon’s historic First Street where participating businesses and chocolate vendors, located inside participating businesses, will offer chocolate and chocolate products for sample and sale.
Music this year will begin at 10 a.m. at the First Street Community Center (221 First St. NE, Mount Vernon). Music highlights will include the Eastern Iowa Brass Band at 11 a.m.; Heart Consort Music at 12:30 p.m. and, the Eddie Piccard Jazz Quartet at 2 p.m.
A Children’s Lawn Party will take place from 12:30 to 2 p.m. on the lawn of the First Street Community Center (221 First St. NE, Mount Vernon). The event will include activities such as M&M Bingo and face painting.
“Mount Vernon is home to several chocolatiers and this event celebrates all of them,” said Chocolate Stroll Committee Chair Mickey Miller. “This year’s event will include such specialties as chocolate-covered bacon and chocolate-covered potato chips as well as the more traditional chocolate truffles, shortbreads and caramels.”
Noted local and regional chocolate vendors scheduled to take part in the event include Big Creek Market, Chameleon’s, Cocoa Bellissimo, Divine Decadents, Fancy Fudje, Fuel, Kalona Chocolates, Lincoln Café, Lori Ann’s Candies, Mount Vernon Confections, Scorz, Skillet, Take the Cake Gourmet Cupcakery, Tastefully Simple, The Perfect Blend and many more.
Born and raised in Iowa City, IA, Will Emrich graduated from Iowa City High School in 2012. During his time there, Will spent 3 years as principal euphonium in the highest band, under the direction of Dr. Myron McReynolds. Will also played trombone in City High’s jazz bands under the direction of Mike Moehlmann and Ryan Arp. Will was selected for the 2009 and 2010 All-State Band, and marched with the Macy’s Great American Marching Band during the Macy’s Thanksgivings Day Parade in 2011. Will was presented with the John Philip Sousa Award in 2012.
Will is currently a Music Education major at the University of Iowa, under the direction of Professor John Manning. As a freshman, Will participates in numerous small, and large, ensembles, including the Hawkeye Marching Band, Concert Band, Jazz Repertory Ensemble, and a Tuba/Euphonium Quartet.
Jessen Smith has been playing trumpet since the age of 10. He was selected to be a member in the Iowa All-State Band in 2009, and three times selected to the All-State Orchestra from 2010-2012. He was selected into the Macy’s Great American Marching Band four four times from 2009-2012, and was a member of their small ensemble solo group in 2010 and 2012. Jessen has received Division One ratings in every solo and ensemble group he has participated in. He marched with Colt Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps from 2005-2009 and with the Colts Drum and Bugle Corps from 2010-2012. He was the trumpet section leader in 2012.
Jessen plans on attending college in the fall to earn a degree in trumpet performance.
