Originally from Marion IA, Ben Reid graduated from Linn-Mar High School in 2009. While there, he spent 2 years as Principal Euphonium in the top concert ensembles under the direction of Steve Stickney, Aaron Nuss, and Dan Terrel. Ben also played lead trombone in the Colton Center Jazz Ensemble, and participated in the Iowa Jazz Champs with the ensemble for the ’08 -’09 school year. Ben was selected as an alternate for the 2007 Iowa All-State Band and in 2008 Ben was accepted into the band. Ben was also awarded the John Philip Sousa Award, Louis Armstrong Award, and placed 2nd in the Northeast Iowa District Major Landers Scholarship competition in 2009.
Ben is currently pursuing his Bachelors of Music Degree in Euphonium Performance at the University of Iowa under the direction of Professor John Manning. Upon entrance to the UI School of Music, Ben received a Music Excellence Award for the ’09-’10 academic year. That same year he also competed in the International Tuba Euphonium Conference’s Young Artist Euphonium Competition. In 2011 Ben placed 3rd at the ITEA Great Plains Regional Tuba Euphonium Competition in the Young Artist Division. Since his admission to the University of Iowa, Ben has received multiple Outstanding Jury Awards from the UI brass faculty. Ben has been involved with many fine ensembles while attending the University of Iowa including Collegium Tubum (the UI Tuba/Euphonium Studio ensemble), Hawkeye Marching Band, UI Symphony Band, and of course the Eastern Iowa Brass Band. Ben has been a featured soloist with the Linn-Mar Wind Ensemble in 2009 and the Cedar Brass ensemble in 2011.
After his undergraduate studies, Ben plans on attending graduate school to earn a Master’s degree in Euphonium Performance. Ben’s dream career is to win one of the D.C. Military Band auditions and be involved with a Military Band for many years.
The Eastern Iowa Brass Band is proud to announce the winners of their 2012 Young Artist Competition.
Lydia Raim has been selected as the high school division winner. Lydia is an 11th grade euphonium player at Clear Creek Amana High School. Her winning audition on Philip Sparke’s “Song For Ina” will be featured in the bands subscription series concert on April 28th. Along with a featured solo performance with the band, Lydia will receive a $250 music scholarship from the EIBB and a gift card from West Music. Matt Reiland has been selected as the runner-up in the high school division. Matt is an 11th grade trombone player at Solon High School. Matt auditioned on Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Concerto for Trombone.” At the April concert, Matt will be presented with a certificate of accomplishment and gift card from West Music. Both of these young high school musicians demonstrated tremendous maturity and musicality in their audition performances. The dedication and preparation displayed by these two musicians is to be commended.
Ben Reid has been selected as the collegiate division winner. Ben is a junior euphonium player attending the University of Iowa. His winning audition on Philip Sparke’s “Harlequin” will be featured in the bands subscription series concert on April 28th. Along with his featured concert performance, Ben will receive a $350 music scholarship from the EIBB and a gift card from West Music. Nathaniel Bean has been selected as the runner-up in the collegiate division. Nathaniel, a graduate trumpet student at the University of Iowa, auditioned on Bruce Broughton’s “Excursions.” At the April concert, Nathaniel will receive a certificate of accomplishment and gift card from West Music.
EXCITING ANNOUNCEMENT!!! Former EIBB director, Casey Thomas, has purchased the online sheet music company, “Solid Brass Music Company”. Casey will begin full operation in mid-February.

I’m pleased to announce that the new owner of Solid Brass Music Company is Casey Thomas, former director of the Eastern Iowa Brass Band. I’ve talked extensively with Casey about the business, and I’m confident that he’ll carry on the customer-oriented operation that Solid Brass Music has been over the years.
Casey probably won’t be in full operation until mid-February to mid-March, but feel free to contact him in the meantime.

New board members 2012
The band held its annual business meeting on January 19th before their regular rehearsal. Members of the board, as well as the committee chairs, presented their annual reports to the band membership. A recap of the past year’s treasurer report, concerts, sales, and goals were all discussed. Before the meeting concluded, the band voted on the slate of candidates and elected Peter, Paul, Keri, and Maria to the board of directors.
All members are looking forward to a wonderful 2012 season as well as wrapping up the 25th anniversary of the Eastern Iowa Brass Band.
The band discussed the possibility of recording a new CD this season. Stay tuned for more information.
The “Winds of Freedom”, a component of the USAF Heartland of America Band stationed in Omaha, Nebraska, will present a concert in the Mount Vernon District Auditorium on Thursday, February 9th, at 7pm.
